We first contacted Austin in 2015. Since then, he has helped us mold into our brand and form our identity as Wooden Grain. We're honored to finally be able to feature him and his amazing work. So check out this interview and learn more about what he does.
Who are you?
My name is Austin John Rossborough. I'm a self taught illustrator, designer & photographer currently living in Columbus, Ohio.
What do you do?
I specialize in both traditional hand drawn illustration and modern typography, with a focus on branding small businesses and individuals. I'm currently working as a freelancer part-time while paying the bills at a small business in downtown Columbus. I’m also teaching myself photography as a side project.
How'd you get into this kind of work?
I've been creating things since I was very young and tried my hand at almost every craft growing up. After graduating high school I took several basic design courses at the local community college in the town where I grew up and fell in love with the craft of branding. Since then I've been teaching myself both hand drawn design and modern branding.
How would you explain your style?
My style is simple and clean, and my hope is to say more with less.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
The largest inspiration for me is my walk with Jesus Christ. I’ve gotten my best ideas during times of prayer. Another big inspiration is the past, specifically hand drawn design and branding from the early 20th century. I love work that has an attention to detail while still remaining easy to understand. Two of my favorite illustrators and inspirations are Hergé and Norman Rockwell.
